推薦閱讀Library Journal專題報告
經常閱讀Library Journal的同業人員可能都知道, Library Journal 除了報導圖書資訊學相關的新知外, 也是一種選書工具. 在每年固定的卷期中總會製作專題書目,回顧並推薦前一年度各類主題中的好書或暢銷書.例如:Best of Magazines, Audiobooks Bestsellers, Best Sci-Tech Books, Best reference books等等. 除了專題書目清單的提供外,Library Journal也會針對一些特定主題,進行市場調查分析. 這些專題報告, 對於同業人員獲得新知與了解圖書館相關行業,例如:出版業,圖書館自動化系統, 資料庫廠商等,都有很大的幫助. 下列是筆者個人很有興趣的專題, 也推薦同業者在每年的固定卷期中, 瀏覽這些專題文章.

你不上圖書館的理由是什麼?
看到老頑童在Blog<同學會隨想>這篇文章中感嘆圖資同學的小孩竟然也很少上圖書館, 自己有頗有感觸, 深深覺得圖書館利用教育工作需要有更多的推廣. 同日之間又湊巧看到一篇從學生自己觀點陳述上圖書館或感謝圖書館員的85種理由(85 Reasons to be Thankful for Librarians), 長長的85項論點中, 雖然有些不一定是我們圖書館或圖書館員所具有的特性或形象, 例如:
6. Girls with glasses can still rock the “sexy librarian” look.
7. “Sexy Librarian” is still a popular costume at Halloween.
但其中仍不乏一些上圖書館的好理由, 例如:
2. Not all information is on the internet.
5. Even with the internet, the library is still the best place to do research.
13. A library is one of the few places people can have free internet access.
15. Somebody has to help lazy people find what they want.
16. Even online collections of books usually connect directly to a library.
18. Studies have shown libraries and librarians improve student test scores.
21. Librarians also help teachers to use a variety of media in the classroom.
36. Experienced librarians often know exactly what resources students need for particular courses.
42. The internet still mostly only holds information from the past 15 or so years, compared with the hundreds of years of knowledge found in a library.

對於這一句話: Somebody has to help lazy people find what they want. 特別有感觸, 圖書館員對於各式各樣的圖書館資源使用問題, 都是以最親切,最專業的態度去協助讀者解決問題, 而且還常免費提供師生各種圖書館利用講習課程服務, ...
常上圖書館是不是真的可以提高學業成績, 我不敢肯定. 但若是懂得利用圖書館資源, 其實可以省錢(網路費, 買書費...), 又可增強自己查找資料的能力, 對於將來有興趣唸書做學術研究的人, 應該很有幫助的.
圖書館員也許可以好好的, 認真的想想師生上圖書館的理由有哪些? 或許可以創造出不錯的口號, 吸引更多師生使用圖書館; 除了此外, 或許也來辦個民調, 看看師生不上圖書館的理由是什麼? 只是膽子要大些, 心要平氣要和, 因為接受批評需要有更多勇氣, 但這才是進步的動力, 不是嗎?

有多少人知道圖書館週?
今天從facebook上看到一則消息: Libraries are the heart of their communities. National Library Week 2010 (April 11-17) will be celebrated with the theme, "Communities thrive @ your library." (http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/pio/natlibraryweek/nlw.cfm), 原來是美國為了慶祝他們在明年的圖書館週, 特別找來了知名作家Neil Gaiman(尼爾·蓋曼)作為該活動的榮譽代言人. Neil Gaiman是今年美國紐伯瑞獎的最新得主, 著名的作品有: 墓園裡的男孩 (The Graveyard Book , 2009), 星塵 (Stardust, 1999; 2007年改編成電影星塵傳奇等). 為了慶祝與宣傳圖書館週, ALA已訂定主題為: Communities thrive @ your library, 並相關文宣品或各項將舉辦活動的時程表都放在網頁中, 讓有需要的圖書館自行下載並廣為宣傳.
突然想起來, 我們國內也有圖書館週 (約於每年12月的第一週), 但感覺上推廣與行銷的活動就不那麼多, 除了圖資界的朋友們, 不曉得有多少讀者知道?

更貼近讀者? 圖資界的專業用語也考慮跟著變!
7月2日是美國專門圖書館學會(Special Libraries Association, 簡稱SLA)的100週年慶. 美國圖書館學會(American Library Association, 簡稱ALA)在Twitter上通報了這個消息, 同日在Library Journal上也有相關的報導, 同時也揭露了SLA想要改名的想法.
比較有趣的是文中另外提到一些圖資專業用語的調整, 經過它們個案研究的結果, 都傾向要使用客戶群所認得的用語("language that the marketplace recognizes"), 因此下列一些圖資的專業術語都建議作重新調整:
正值館內有意作組織調整之際, 或許圖資人也該動動腦, 跳脫傳統的組織架構與傳統的名稱思維,從讀者的角度想想看吧!

Acquisitions → Purchases個人覺得這真是個很好的思維, 時代在變, 服務名稱怎麼能不跟著變. 長久以來, 圖資界使用"採訪" ,"編目", "參考服務", "流通"等術語, 常讓人無法一"聽"瞭然服務的實質內容, 透過新語彙的使用, 或者可以讓我們的客戶群(讀者)更瞭解圖書館在做些什麼服務吧! 或許也有助於彼此的溝通呢!

Taxonomy and Metadata → Classification
Reference → Customer Assistance
Library Instruction → Teaching/Training
Online searching → Research
Information Analysis → Market Intelligence
